“Handling” Playtest Week
Last week we attended “Playtest Thursday” on the second floor of 370 Jay St with our games. I came away from the experience with some very specific feedback. Seeing a number of people play the game showed me things I didn’t anticipate. Some folks approached the cabinet and immediately treated it as a touch screen. Others waved their hands but attempted to move items using two hands, which didn’t work well with the scripted “grab” gesture.
The key items I took away from the playtest included:
- Needing an indicator in world for where to send box
- Accessibility! Not everyone has two hands available to use. Thank you Eric with an arm cast for pointing this out!
- Use grabbing a box to start the game
- Hands should disappear when not tracked by Leap
- Need an indication that box is grasped – outline or glowing edges
Back on the floor at ITP it was time to give the cabinet a final polish. I took all of the components out and fit as many of the plywood panels back together with wood glue as could come apart. I then sanded the cabinet with a 220 grit sandpaper and applied a second coat of paint on the sides for a glossier look.
My expired Zipcar card got put to use applying a black vinyl wrap to the front and top of the cabinet.
I also affixed the black acrylic panels to the front of the cabinet with Gorilla glue to hold everything in securely.
To meet the deadline for the ITP Spring Show I put together the short video above showing progress in Unity following feedback from the playtest.
